Russian Art of the 18th - early 20th century


The Museum interior with carved furniture and water-colours of Architect Franchesco Camporezi. The hall of this department display engravings, paintings, articles of silver, porcelain, faience, glass and cut-glass, enamels, pearl embroideries, embroideries in beads, gold and silver laces, woven and printed shawls, silk, velvet and brocade textiles, pieces of furniture.

The Museum possesses a collection of the 18th - early 20th century painting which was formed in the Monastery living quarters and palaces. It comprises portraits, allegoric and historic compositions, landscapes, interiors.

Ivan Nikitich Nikitin (1680 - 1742) is an outstanding painter of Peter the Great's time. He was a son of a priest, studied in Moscow , then sent to Italy as a pensioner of Peter I who greatly appreciated his talent. When he returned to St. Petersburg he was appointed a court painter. After Peter the Great's death the artist found himself in opposition to Anna Ioannovna, wasconvicted and exiled to Siberia. The painter died on his way back from the exile.

Alexei Petrovich Antropov (1716 - 1795) - a master of chamber portraits. He started as a decorator under the supervision of L. Caravaque, A. Matveyev, M. Zakharov, I. Vishnayakov. Antropov painted portraits during his whole artistic life.


In the 18th century all techniques of metal work developed. Chasing was especially popular. Russian filigree of the 18th - 19th century was marked by high decorativeness and superb work.

The small setting for "The Book of Pontifical Services", donated to the Monastery by Metropolitan Platon, is an outstanding work of the 18th century Moscow jewellery art. It is made of twisted and smooth silver wire of various thickness and a flattened ribbon. The ornament consists of floral elements - leaves, flowers, buds.
