The Tower was named after the neighbouring onion kitchen-garden. It was constructed as a defensive tower. In the 19th century the upper part of the fortress wall between the Water and Onion Towers was arranged as a gallery, and the upper tier of the Onion Tower was reconstructed into a pavilion providing a good view of the surrounding area.
